FCB away to Stuttgart in last sixteen

DFB German Cup holders Bayern have been handed a stiff task in the last sixteen of this year’s competition: the next step on the road to the final at the Berlin Olympic stadium takes the Cup’s most successful club to Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart. The draw for the Round of 16 was made live on Sunday evening national TV by Women’s World Cup winner Kerstin Garefrekes and German FA (DFB) General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach.

Bayern boast an excellent Cup record against the Swabians down the years, winning five out of six meetings. The most recent came in the Round of 16 in 2004-5, the eventual Cup winners triumphing 3-0. However, all five FCB victories were achieved in Munich. The solitary defeat came in the last sixteen back in 1989-90, when the Bavarians fell 3-0 in Stuttgart.

The Round of 16 ties will be played on 27 and 28 January 2009. The final is scheduled for 30 May 2009 in Berlin.
