Low Almost Quit

Joachim Low, the German coach, has confessed he almost quit his job during Euro 2008.

Despite starting the tournament brightly with an opening game victory over Poland, the Germans went on to lose to Croatia and were faced with the very real prospect of being sent home early from the competition.

Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Low confessed that the defeat to Croatia had hit him hard and made him consider his position.

“Obviously I had these thoughts [of resigning],” he said, before adding, “But I tried to turn them into positives and don't let these thoughts get me down.”

Germany then went on to defeat Austria in their final group game to ensure qualification although Low admits that defeat would have meant a very different scenario.

“We would have had to sit down and considered how the atmosphere was and if it was worth [continuing],” he confessed before revealing that, “I cannot say what would have happened. Probably a lot would have collapsed around us.”

With the group stages safely negotiated, Germany went on to produce their best football of the tournament to defeat Portugal 3-2 and confirm their place in the semi final against Turkey.
