Drama surrounding Frei
The forty-second minute of yesterday's match at Basel's St. Jakob Park was a shock for Swiss football fans and Borussia Dortmund supporters.
Alexander Frei, who to that point had been the best player on the field, limped off the field with tears in his eyes. His Swiss team eventually lost the match 1-0.
To the bench on crutches
Czech right outside defender Zdenek Grygera crashed very hard against Alexander Frei, who only returned from a eight and a half month injury break this past Feburary.
While being examined for the first time on the sideline, the 28 year old Frei covered his face with his hands. Frei returned to the Swiss bench on crutches in the middle of the second half.
Up to twelve weeks sidelined
The first reports out of Switzerland inform of a torn interior ligament. New BVB Head Coach Jürgen Klopp said on German television, "If his diagnosis stands, it will be twelve weeks before he can reach his old form."
The top striker would then be back on the ball for his club around the end of August. That is, as long as a torn anterior cruciate ligament is ruled out in further examinations.
For Swiss captain Alex Frei, Euro 2008 is finished in any case.
