Altidore transferring to Villarreal
SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY (TICKER) —Jozy Altidore is heading overseas.
The New York Red Bulls announced Wednesday that Major League Soccer and 2007-08 Spanish La Liga runner-up Villarreal CF have agreed in principle to a transfer fee with the young striker.
The final price of Altidore’s transfer is $10 million, according to goal.com.
If those figures are accurate, the transfer fee would be a record for an American player, surpassing the $5 million paid by Fulham for Eddie Johnson.
Altidore, 18, must agree to personal contract terms and undergo a physical with Villarreal before the deal can be completed.
Altidore has three goals in eight appearances for the Red Bulls this season. In his career, he has 15 goals in 37 appearances. He also has one goal in two full international appearances for the United States.
