Francesco Totti confessed for a while this afternoon “I believed we’d win the Scudetto.”

The Roma captain had maintained a stoic and superstitious denial that they had any chance of taking the title as the gap from Inter closed up towards the final round.

For an hour the Giallorossi had the title sewn up, until Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late brace sank Parma to seal the Scudetto.

“For a while there today I really believed we’d won it. It’s a shame, but still a wonderful experience,” said Totti.

Despite the failure to capture a seemingly impossible trophy, thousands of fans flocked to Fiumicino airport to welcome home the squad from Catania.

“It is great to see so many fans celebrating the squad. It means the team and the fans are a single entity.

“We must thank everyone for this season and now we still have the chance to win the Coppa Italia.”

It’s set to be a battle royal on May 24, when Roma take on Inter for the Coppa Italia Final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Unlike previous editions, this Final will be a one-off game to decide the trophy.
