Eriksson is believed to have been recommended by Benfica playmaker Rui Costa who was a player under him in 1991, although Manchester United number two Carlos Queiroz is another strong candidate.
Reports in Lisbon today claim Eriksson, who still has a house on the outskirts of the city, would be replaced at City by Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini who is set to leave Italy at the end of the season.
However, it is unlikely Eriksson would quit City for a job in an inferior competition with less funds to spend in the transfer market.
