Hitzfeld: We Had a Bad Day
Quote:
Bayern didn’t have things all their own way at the easycredit Stadion against Nürnberg in the 50th Bundesliga derby between the two sides, and Ottmar Hitzfeld admitted afterwards that his side had had a bad day.
Hitzfeld believes that the midweek international break adversely affected his side as they looked second best for large periods in the game before eventually claiming a draw.
Zvejezdan Misimovic put the home side in front after 44 minutes, but Lukas Podolski rescued a point for the league leaders with an equaliser nine minutes from the end.
“We had a bad day” the Bayern trainer admitted after the final whistle. “The national team players came back very tired and found today very difficult. Ribéry was one of the most tired players on the pitch” he explained.
“You could see just how much energy those internationals had taken out of the players. However, we didn’t combine well and had a number of weaknesses.
“For the opening goal we had a total black-out. At half time I was very annoyed and told the players they couldn’t run 2km more for their national sides than for us. It’s just not on.”
Bayern President Franz Beckenbauer was equally disappointed, but was glad of the point gained in difficult circumstances.
“It is never easy in Nürnberg. It is a local derby and a year ago we lost here 3-0. So compared with that it was an improvement” ‘der Kaiser’ opined.
“The second half was much better than the first. The team lost their advantage in the game after 10 or 15 minutes, but in the second period we improved and the substitutes contributed to the fact that we didn’t lose the game.”
Nürnberg trainer Thomas von Heesen was however left disappointed not to have taken all three points and secured his first win in charge.
“We saw today from our team what we expect in our situation. At the end of the day we were not fully rewarded for our performance because we switched off once.
“But the way they played with self confidence and courage against Bayern shows that we are on the right path.”
