Reports in Holland claim that AZ Alkmaar trainer Louis van Gaal is set to leave the club at the end of the season, prompting speculation that he could become the new trainer of HSV Hamburg.
According to Dutch TV station ‘NOS’, van Gaal is definitely leaving the Eredivisie club at the end of this season despite having a contract which runs until 2010.
The club have gone from league title and Uefa Cup contenders last season to twelfth place in a year and bosses at the club look to have lost patience with the coach.
The 56 year old is certainly experienced enough internationally, which is one of the main criteria cited by the Hamburg board as they search for a suitable replacement for the outgoing Huub Stevens.
Van Gaal has had two stints as manager of Barcelona, coached Ajax and was the Dutch national team trainer between 2000 and 2002.
The news of his possible exit from Alkmaar has got the grapevine buzzing as to a possible move to Hamburg. Van Gaal himself has already stated that he could well imagine working abroad again.
Fellow Eredivisie trainer Fred Rutten from Twente Enschede is also a top candidate for the HSV job as is Jürgen Klopp from Mainz.
