With Hamburg still in the hunt for a trainer to succeed Huub Stevens at the end of the season, and the search entering its final phase, a new name has entered the picture- Croatian national coach Slaven Bilic.
HSV have still not come to an agreement with favourite candidate Fred Rutten of Twente Enschede, which has led to the name of Slaven Bilic entering the frame to succeed the PSV-bound Huub Stevens in the summer.
Reports in ‘Kicker’ claim that HSV leadership team Bernd Hoffmann, Dietmar Beiersdorfer and Katja Kraus travelled to Zagreb on Monday on business concerning the soon to be vacant HSV trainer’s job.
39 year old Bilic is said to be the target after he led Croatia to qualification for the Euro 2008 finals, where they have been drawn in Germany’s group.
Bilic has Bundesliga experience after making 66 appearances for Karlsruhe between 1993 and 1995. His playing career took him to both Everton and West Ham after he left Germany.
Bilic started out as trainer of Hajduk Split before taking on the role of Croatian U-21 manager. He took over the full international side in July 2006.
He has enjoyed good success with the Croatian national side finishing top of Group E pipping England to qualification for the European Championships. He is seen as a smart tactician and has experience of working with top players.
