Amantino Mancini reveals the winning goal against Real Madrid was worked out on the Trigoria training ground.


“We knew that Real had a lot of quality and could move the ball around well, so we went out there intending to hit them on the break.”


Francesco Totti trapped the ball and placed a wonderful disguised pass to free Mancini with the outside of his foot.


“These are moves we practice in training and the Coach always asks us to pass deep, so it went very well,” he said after the 2-1 victory over Real Madrid.


“We were fortunate and are very happy to have won an important game. We go to Spain with the advantage, but there is nothing definite, so we hope to do well in the second leg.”


Last season Roma also won the first leg of their quarter-final 2-1, but then went on to lose 7-1 away to Manchester United.


“We will not repeat the errors of Old Trafford! That can never happen again, as it was just inexplicable. We are more mature now and will have another great performance in Madrid.”


This goal has done wonders for Mancini’s self-esteem and his rapport with the fans, which has been in flux ever since contract renegotiations hit problems.


“We are discussing my new contract and are at a fairly advanced level, even if nothing is written down yet.”


The Brazilian also had a difficult relationship with teammate Totti, as they admitted they did not speak for two years.


“For two years we were a little iffy, as we are young lads and are quite proud, but even then we always gave our best on the field for Roma. Now we have sorted it all out.”
