Totti: Bias, but not Inter's fault Tuesday 12 February, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roma captain Francesco Totti has waded into the debate over refereeing in Serie A by claiming any bias is 'subconscious'.
A series of debatable refereeing decisions, culminating in the award of an offside goal for Inter against Catania on Sunday, have caused uproar in the peninsula.
While the officials are keen to stress that all errors are accidental, it has been suggested by some victims that they are the result of a ‘subconscious bias’ towards the bigger sides.
“I think that there is a bit of subconscious bias,” Totti stated in an interview with Sky Sport.
“Everyone is scared to speak out against Inter at the moment, but if they had the courage to say what they saw it would all be easier.
“I don’t think that Inter as a club come into it,” the World Cup winner clarified. “Their players are great and they are winning on the pitch, even if they are having a little bit of help.”
While Totti was keen to avoid any direct accusations, the frustration of chasing a seemingly invincible side was evident.
“I think it will always be the same with referees,” he lamented. “It used to happen to Juventus and now it’s the Nerazzurri, but I don’t think that Inter have done what the Old Lady did with the telephone calls.
“Referees can make mistakes – it’s not easy to take charge of a game for 90 minutes and not slip up. However, when these mistakes affect the same team it makes you think a little.
“I don’t want to say that games are being falsified, but you train all week yet you know that Inter will win either because of their ability or because of something happening.”
