The draw for the quarter finals of the DFB Pokal has paired Munich rivals Bayern and 1860 against each other in a mouth watering tie. Last year’s beaten finalists, Stuttgart face Carl-Zeiss Jena.
The draw was made by women’s world champion Simone Laudehr and she pulled out the two Munich clubs together to set up a potentially cracking quarter final.
Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg have been drawn against Hamburg, while Borussia Dortmund will take on Hoffenheim.
It will be the 204th duel between the two deadly Munich rivals, with the two sides meeting last week in a friendly which ended 1-1. Bayern haven’t beaten 1860 in the last four games.
“Of course it’s a dream draw” admitted Bayern trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld.
“It’s what the fans of Munich have been waiting years for. We are really looking forward to this local derby.”
The reaction from the second division side was rather more reserved.
“Bayern are of course the toughest opponents left in the competition so we can’t really talk about it being a dream draw” said 1860 trainer Marco Kurz.
“A ‘home’ game would also have suited us better.”
The quarter finals will take place on 26th-27th February. The semi-finals are scheduled for 18th-19th March, and because of the Euro 2008 Championship finals, the Cup Final itself in Berlin’s Olympiastadion is booked in for 19th April.
