Javier Irureta Takes Zaragoza Hotseat

Former Deportivo La Coruna boss Javier Irureta has taken over at Real Zaragoza, following Ander Garitano's shock resignation...

Legendary Depor coach Javier Irureta is back in the Liga after taking over at struggling Real Zaragoza.

The Romareda outfit parted company with Victor Fernandez earlier in the month, only for his replacement, Ander Garitano, to himself sensationally quit the job just a week into his tenure.

Now, Irureta has been charged with the task of taking the blanquillos back up the table.

The 59-year-old Basque coach has not held a management position since an ill-fated spell in charge of Real Betis in 2006. Prior to that, he spent six seasons with big-spending Deportivo, helping them to a league title and significant Champions League runs.

Previously, the well-traveled boss handled clubs including Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, and Racing Santander.

An ex-striker, he spent the bulk of his playing career with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.

Weirdly Garitano quit after a just week and now Javi Irueta is boss.

Also strangely Javi Irueta was announced to take over at Real Sociedad but when the Zaragoza job offer came in he must have changed his mind at the last minute.
