Titans Close Women's Soccer Pre-Season With 3-2 OT Victory
August 28, 2007
Box Score
It took a little longer than expected, but the Detroit Titan's women's soccer team prevailed over Saginaw Valley State in overtime in what proved to be a thrilling conclusion to the 2007 exhibition season.
Trina Kochanski netted the game winner with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give the Titans the win.
Archana Wadhawan scored the Titans' first goal of the season in the first half to give Detroit a short-lived one-goal advantage. Saginaw (2-1-0) would respond with a breakaway goal of its own to even the score at one. Lauren Moss' goal later in the first put the Titans back on top 2-1, and the score would remain that way heading into the break.
Detroit was given plenty of scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not capitalize. Following a Nicole Gipson shot that hit the post, Saginaw countered and scored its second goal of the match to tie the game and send it into overtime.
It looked as though a second overtime would be necessary, until a scrum in front of the Saginaw net allowed Kochanski to get a foot on the ball and send it past the Saginaw keeper for the game winner with only seconds remaining on the clock.
"We have some defensive issues, but the girls created some scoring chances and really battled," commented head coach Mike Lupenec following the "ugly win."
Detroit returns to action Tuesday Sept., 4, when the Titans open their regular season by traveling to Eastern Michigan. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm. Note that the game was originally scheduled as a UDM home contest, but has been moved to Ypsilanti due to on-going construction of the Titans' new home field.
