Titans Open Women's Soccer Season At Saginaw
August 27, 2007

The Titan women's soccer team (0-0-0) commences their season, Tuesday, Aug. 28, when they travel to Saginaw to take on Division II Saginaw Valley State University (2-0-0). The Titans will look to put a halt to SVSU's strong start as they get their 2007 campaign underway. Kick off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The Titans, picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League, are looking to advance to the League championship for a fifth consecutive year. A strong 8-3-0 run to finish last season gave the Titans a final record of 10-11-0 (4-3-0 Horizon League) and landed them in the Horizon League Championship match. The Titans fell to Loyola, 2-1, and missed out on the chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. A return trip to the title match is on the mind of head coach Mike Lupenec, but it must be done without the services of two-time League Player of the Year Mary Parker. Parker, who graduated last spring, has joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant this fall.

The Titans return six starters from last year's Horizon League runner-up squad. Among those returnees is junior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry (Flushing, MI//Flushing). Fortenberry has allowed just two goals in six career Horizon League Tournament games, and has collected 16 shutouts in two seasons of play. Senior Megan Canty (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) is the team's leading returning scorer, having netted eight points last season.

In addition to the nine lettermen returning, coach Lupenec will be welcoming six newcomers to the team this fall. Their learning curve will be vital to the success of the Titans this season.

The Titans open league play Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they host Valparaiso.
