Default Defoe And Spurs Reach Compromise

Jermain Defoe has been given reassurances that he has a future at Tottenham Hotpsur after being linked with a move away from the club this summer.

It was reported that the England striker and manager Martin Jol fell out after the victory against Derby County last weekend and rumours grew that a late deal would done to sell Defoe.

Instead, the Premiership outfit have held lengthy talks with the former West Ham goalscorer and told him that he will play more games this season.

Defoe reciprocated by telling Tottenham that he wanted to stay, but he did state that he will not put pen-to-paper on a new deal until later in the year.

Tottenham are concerned that the 25-year-old will stay at the club for the remaining 22 months of his contract and then leave on a free transfer.

With a new five-year deal on the table, it remains to be seen if Jol will name Defoe in enough games to convince him to commit his future to the club.

A bizarre story linking the striker as part of a swap deal with Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips emerged earlier this week, but was quickly denied by both sides.

Defoe has been down the pecking order in recent months with Dimitar Berbatov and captain Robbie Keane the preferred pairing in attack.

The arrival of Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic in the summer added even more competition for places and Defoe was clearly upset at his lack of playing time.

Rumours have suggested that Jol asked his board to sell Defoe over the summer rather than Mido, but that has not been made public by anyone at the club.
