Historical leader
Real Madrid top most of the rankings in Spain
The 77th season of the Spanish League kicks-off on Saturday with Real Madrid as defending champions, after winning the title a couple of months ago in one of the tightest campaigns in the history of the competition.
The first ever Matchday of the Spanish League took place on 10 February 1929. At first, only ten teams participated, and throughout the years Real Madrid have become the true kings of the championship, leading every single ranking in Spain. A total of Fifty-five teams have played in the First Division in all these years and Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao are the only three never to have been relegated.
More titles
Real Madrid have won 30 of the 76 seasons of the League (40%), twelve more than runners-up Barcelona. Atletico Madrid are third in the ranking with 18 titles, Athletic Bilbao fourth with 8, and Valencia fifth with 6. Real Sociedad have won 2, and Sevilla, Betis and Deportivo one each.
The Whites have finished second 17 times, sometimes losing the title by goal-average. They've been third seven times. They've been in the top three 54 out of the 76 seasons.
More points
Real Madrid also top the points ranking with a total of 3,487, followed by Barcelona with 127 less. Athletic Bilbao are third with 2,818 points, 669 less than the Whites. Five other teams have taken more than 2,000 points: Valencia (2,789), Atletico Madrid (2,740), Espanyol (2,324), Sevilla (2,201) and Real Sociedad (2,198). The latter will play in the Second Division this campaign.
The ranking counts all the points earned by the teams in the First Division. In the old days, only two points were awarded per victory, which explains why teams that have done well in the last ten years may be higher on the list that sides which were successful over ten years ago.
More victories
Real Madrid have won 1,363 out of the 2,382 matches they've played in the League; 63 and 308 more than Barcelona and Athletic, respectively. Real Madrid have only lost 513 fixtures, less than any other Club to have played in more than 40 seasons. In other words, the Madridistas have only lost 21 out of every 100 fixtures.
More goals
The Whites have scored a total of 4,914 in the Spanish competition, 55 more than Barcelona and 791 more than Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid are also the team to have conceded the least number of strikes out of the Clubs to have participated in over 60 editions of the championship -only 2,759, 43 less than Barcelona.
So far, Real Madrid have had the largest number of top-socrers in the League (23):
