Well Messi has a case for being a candidate for it as the award is judged on 2007. Messi came back from injury mid February and scored 11 league goals from March 11th to the end of the season which is a fantastic finish for a winger.
In the 11 league goals there was the hatrick against Real Madrid, his double against Atletico (run + lob), the Depor goal, the Recre run, his double vs Espanyol which could of won the title and his double vs Nastic, most of which were fantastic goals. There's also the double vs Getafe in the Copa del Rey with the Messidona goal

and he had a very good Copa America in which we'll remember the goal vs Mexico.
They both still have until December to impress and if Messi has a fantastic start to the season then he could snatch the award from Kaka.
