Walter Novellino has admitted that he’s fulfilled a dream by becoming Coach of Serie A side Torino.
Novellino has replaced Gianni De Biasi on the Granata bench after spending five seasons at Sampdoria, returning to the club where he made his debut as a top-flight player back in 1972.
“I feel I am back home,” said Novellino as he was unveiled to the media on Wednesday. “This is a dream come true thanks to President Urbano Cairo.
“I arrived here when I was a kid and I return after 37 years. I have always been paired with Toro because I grew up at the Filadelfia.”
The 54-year-old was offered a two-year contract by the sleeping giants and he had no hesitation in putting pen to paper.
“I immediately accepted Cairo’s offer and I will do all I can in order for the team to be one of the protagonists of next season,” he added.
“I was so excited last night that I wasn’t able to sleep and I hope I will meet the supporters’ expectations.”
The Granata, who ended last season in 17th, will also have a derby to face next term after Juventus were promoted back to the First Division.
“The derby is an amazing thing,” added Novellino. “It represents an event for the entire city and we hope to win it.
“I want my men to be determined and strong – they need to show the features which characterise the Granata tradition.
“Did Juventus contact me this summer? For me, I’m now at the strongest club in Italy…”
Torino have also announced the appointment of a new general director in the shape of Stefano Antonelli and sporting director Fabio Lupo.
