Foster set for knee surgery
United goalkeeper Ben Foster is set to undergo surgery on a serious knee injury later this month, which will rule him out of the start of the season.
It is a problem that troubled Foster towards the end of last season, and Watford, where he spent the 2006/07 campaign on loan, alerted United to the issue.
The injury was then jointly assessed by United and England's medical staff after the goalkeeper reported for international duty at the end of May.
The former Stoke City stopper, who joined United in July 2005, was sent to see a specialist to get to the bottom of the problem and it was decided that surgery is the best solution.
A club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: "Ben has a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee and will require an operation in two to three weeks' time."
While the Reds' medical staff have not put a timescale on the 24-year-old's return to action, he is likely to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The news comes as a major blow for the young England international, who is yet to make his competitive debut for United, as he was due to spend next season shadowing Edwin van der Sar and challenge the Dutchman for Old Trafford's No.1 spot.
