Pennant expects Reds stay
Quote:
Jermaine Pennant says he expects to stay at Liverpool next season - and has set his sights on establishing himself in the England side.
The former Arsenal and Birmingham winger failed to convince when he arrived at Anfield last summer, but has now started to find his feet and won critical acclaim for his performance in the UEFA Champions League final.
Rafa Benitez has stressed the importance of making changes to his squad for next season if Liverpool are to challenge for the Premiership, but Pennant is confident that his place is safe.
"I don't think there will be a complete change of squad," he told the club's official website.
"There may be a few players coming and going, but that happens at every club.
"I'm an easy target, but no-one has said anything to me about leaving. I've got a contract for another two years and I hope I can stay for as long as possible."
And Pennant feels he could secure a regular place on the right flank for England.
David Beckham made an impressive comeback for his country in the friendly with Brazil on Friday night, but he may find it difficult to hold onto his place when he moves to LA Galaxy.
And with the likes of Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips yet to fully establish themselves in the position long term, Pennant feels he can take on the role.
"A lot of players have been tried on the right, but no-one's filled that gap yet," he told the Daily Star Sunday.
"I'm still young and, if I can keep playing well, I don't see why I can't get the nod one day."
