Tottenham v Man City (13.05.07)
Quote:
A home draw against Manchester City will guarantee Tottenham Hotspur a place in the Uefa Cup next season, but even a defeat could be enough should other results go their way on the final day of the season.
After a campaign in which cup competitions have provided their most memorable moments, Spurs will be determined not to let a top-seven league finish slip out of their grasp on the final day, and Thursday's 1-1 draw with Blackburn means another point will be enough to clinch a place in Europe.
If Bolton or Reading fail to win on Sunday, against Villa and Blackburn respectively, then Martin Jol's men can even afford to lose against a City side with just one win in their past seven games.
However, Tottenham's preparations have been somewhat overshadowed by Hossam Ghaly's petulant reaction to being substituted against Rovers on Thursday, with the Egyptian midfielder's future under scrutiny after angering fans by throwing his shirt to the ground.
Ghaly trained on Friday though, and could be given the chance to make amends for his indiscretion against City.
Jermaine Jenas could be missing in midfield after aggravating a back problem before kick-off on Thursday, meaning Teemu Tainio will deputise if the England international fails to recover.
Portuguese defender Ricardo Rocha also missed the 1-1 draw due to an ankle injury, so Anthony Gardner will be hoping to keep his place in the starting XI for the final game of the season.
Robbie Keane is pushing hard for a start alongside Dimitar Berbatov after his impressive contribution from the bench on Thursday, but Jermain Defoe scored Spurs' goal against Blackburn and will provide stiff competition.
Mido (groin), Paul Stalteri and Lee Young-pyo (knee) have all been sidelined for recent games and will miss out again as the Premiership reaches its conclusion.
City meanwhile are likely to hand Stephen Jordan the chance to say goodbye after the club annonunced on Friday that the defender's contract will not be extended beyond the summer.
Jordan could start at left-back as Michael Ball is suspended after his nasty stamp on Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Joey Barton remains suspended after his training ground bust-up with Ousmane Dabo, whilst fellow England international Micah Richards is sidelined with a calf problem.
