Sammer Wants Loew To Stay Germany Coach After Euro 2008
The German Football Federation's sports director Matthias Sammer has called for national team coach Joachim Loew to be given a longer-term contract beyond Euro 2008.
Loew is an "absolute role model" in the job he took on from Juergen Klinsmann after the World Cup last summer, Sammer told Thursday's Die Welt newspaper.
Under 47-year-old Loew, Germany have won seven of nine games since the World Cup and are leading their qualifying group for next year's European Championships in Austria and Switzerland.
A first defeat came in a friendly against Denmark in Duisburg Wednesday evening, when an experimental German side featuring six new caps during the course of the game slipped to a 1-0 defeat.
Sammer praised Loew's work with the team, his technical knowledge and his personable manner, saying it would be "absolutely desirable if he remains with us for a long time."
Loew, who has a contract until the end of Euro 2008, was Klinsmann's choice as assistant when the former international striker became Germany coach in July 2004 after the team's poor showing at Euro 2004.
Sammer said it would be important for the development of the whole of German football, not just for the national team, if Loew were able to continue the concept begun with Klinsmann after Euro 2008.
