Arminia Bielefeld have replaced coach Frank Geideck with two-time former boss Ernst Middendorp.
Middendorp, who was sacked by South African side Kaiser Chiefs earlier this month, has agreed a deal at the Schuco-Arena through to June 2008.
He was in charge at Bielefeld from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1994 to 1998, before being voted the club's 'coach of the 20th century' by fans.
Bielefeld are currently in the bottom three in the Bundesliga but Middendorp is confident he can turn the club's fortunes around in their remaining nine games of the season.
"It is still a realistic goal for us to avoid relegation," he said.
"We are only one point adrift of safety and have a good goal difference, which could yet prove important.
"The only thing working against us is 17th place in the table and our poor recent form."
Geideck, who picked up just three points from his four games at the helm after taking over from Thomas von Heesen in February, will continue at the club as Middendorp's assistant coach.
