Real deny Capello exit claim Monday 19 February, 2007

Real Madrid have dismissed claims by a Spanish radio station that boss Fabio Capello has handed in his resignation.

Cadena Cope today started a sporting hurricane in Spain after insisting that the Italian would quit the outfit after Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

However, Real Madrid organised an emergency Press conference in the Spanish capital this evening to rubbish the claims.

"The board is unaware of any resignation by Fabio Capello and we were very surprised by the reports that appeared in the media," club spokesman Miguel Angel Arroyo said.

"It hardly contributes to the right atmosphere on the eve of such an important match as tomorrow's game.

"Reports like this only serve to destabilise the club and we'd like to express our surprise and dismay about this type of report.

"In this world you can assure very few things, but I can guarantee that that the board has not received any resignation from Fabio Capello either verbally or in written form."

The former midfielder, who won the Liga title with Real during his one campaign there in the mid 1990s, has been under pressure for some weeks now.

Real have already lost seven times in 23 League games and the 0-0 draw with Betis left them four points behind leaders Barcelona.

He’s also had high-profile bust-ups with David Beckham and Antonio Cassano, players who he’s frozen out of the squad for a period of time.

Capello, who according to Cadena Cope would be replaced by former player Michel, signed for Real from Juventus in the summer.

Whispers suggest that Capello has a clause in his Real contract which states that he would net £11m – his total salary up until 2009 – if he was sacked.
