Adam Sternberger a player to watch score 5 goals
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers soccer player Adam Sternberger (Mays Landing, N.J.) has been named to the Jewish Sports Review's 2006 Men's Soccer All-America team. Sternberger led the team in goals for the second-consecutive season and helped guide the Scarlet Knights to two postseason tournaments.
Sternberger started 13 of the 19 games in which he played last season, leading the Scarlet Knights in both points (11) and goals (5). He scored his first goal of the season, as well as the game winner, in a 1-0 shutout of Princeton on Sept. 20. He also scored both of RU's goals in the team's 2-1 win over Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST tournament. Sternberger's solid play and outstanding leadership over the past three seasons earned him co-vice captain honors for the 2007 season.
After starting the 2006 season with a 1-5 record, the Scarlet Knights rattled off a nine-game winning streak and earned a first-round bye in the BIG EAST tournament. RU advanced to the semifinals after its defeat of the Irish, but fell to No. 4 West Virginia in penalty kicks. Rutgers earned an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament, however, and faced Rhode Island in the first round. The Scarlet Knights battled the Rams through two overtime periods before falling in penalty kicks for the second-consecutive game to end the season with a 10-6-3 record
