Dyer feared for sight

Kieron Dyer has revealed that he feared he had lost the sight in one eye following a freak training-ground accident.

The speedy midfielder was putting the finishing touches to his rehabilitation following a lengthy spell on the sidelines when he collided with a pole.

Dyer lost all vision in one eye and has revealed that doctors initially feared the worst.

He underwent a series of tests in hospital and although his vision is not 100 percent, Dyer has been informed there is unlikely to be any lasting damage.

"I thought I had lost the sight in one eye," Dyer told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "My sight completely went.

"And when I looked at the doctor's face and he did not want to say how bad it was, I realised it was bad.

"By the time we got to the hospital to see the specialist, my sight still had not come back.

"But after we waited around, it slowly came back and after they did the tests, they said there was a lot of trauma to the eye, but I should get my eyesight back.

"It is still not 100 percent, but I was given the okay to play after two weeks."

Dyer returned against Manchester City at the weekend and has revealed he was disappointed to be named on the bench.

He added: "I was a bit disappointed I was only on the bench. But the manager has that approach, even though he is under a lot of pressure.

"He was at West Ham when he had the likes of Paolo Di Canio and Frederic Kanoute injured. He never rushes players back.

"You are frustrated, but you have got to take your hat off. He never takes chances with his players and you have got to be thankful for that."

That could have ended his professional carieer in Newcastle and so ever.I'm happy for him that this ended fortunately.
