A leading Major League Soccer official has described David Beckham's rumoured move to a America as a "marriage made in heaven".

According to reports, the MLS will next month announce a rule change that will allow clubs to break the salary cap to sign certain players, and that will enable the likes of Red Bull New York to make a move for Beckham.

If the former England captain can be lured across the Atlantic from Real Madrid, MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis believes he can help the MLS grow more quickly.

"We have 65 million people that are connected by soccer in this country but they're not rabid yet," he told The Sun.

"That's the challenge and the opportunity of soccer in the US and it's the challenge and the opportunity for David Beckham in the United States.

"Whoever is able to connect and activate that massive potential fanbase wins. And if Beckham can do that and help MLS do that, those are the kinds of marriages made in heaven."

At present, the highest-paid player in the MLS is Chivas USA's Juan Francisco Palencia, who earns a base salary of USD 692,308 and a total of USF 1,360,000 after guaranteed bonuses.

The 31-year-old Beckham has seen talks on a new contract with Real stall in recent weeks.
