A class of 13 newcomers will compete for time in 2006, including Soroka (Langhorne, Pa./Edison Academic Center) and UMass transfer Mike Mingione (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate), who have trained on campus through the winter, spring and summer. Both forwards have a chance to contribute right away, along with sophomore Jara Habib, (Englishtown, N.J.) and junior Jeff Stepan (Fremont, Calif./Irvin).
Freshmen Andy Foote (Groveland, Mass./Cushing Academy), Adam Himeno (Atlanta, Ga./Druid Hills), Alex Paszek (Rahway, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Tadeu Terra (Sau Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Abel) can all change the complexion of the front line, based on matchups and opposing teams.
Head coach Dr. Dave Masur thinks the group of newcomers can provide some 'added punch' in the attack, while Foote, Himeno and a trio of other freshmen have chances to boost the team's play in the midfield. Diego Correa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Abel), Michael Luk (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute) and Sergio Munez (Linden, N.J./Linden) add to the depth of a unit that features the versatility of senior Billy Hole (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and sophomore Rory Quinn (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional).
With his size and skill, center back Joel Gustafsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/ Katrinelundsgymnasiet) highlights a class of defensive newcomers that will add to the Red Storm's veteran back line. Local product David Reed (Teaneck, N.J./Paramus Catholic) brings athleticism and skill to a unit anchored by senior leaders Patrik Engstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/Frans Schartaus Gymnasium) and Georgios Spanos (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).
Redshirt freshmen Ben Clack (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville) and Petar Rakovic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro/Sports Grammar School) have a year of collegiate training under their belts and should be ready to contribute right away.
Anthony DeMarco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood), a sophomore transfer from Cleveland State, adds to the team's already impressive depth at the goalkeeper position. DeMarco and junior Neal Kitson (Little Neck, N.Y./Cardozo/Dowling College) both have collegiate experience, while talented redshirt freshman Michael Keohane (Cupertino, Calif./The Pendleton School) looks to rebound from an injury that sidelined him for the 2005 season. Junior Jason Landers (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Wissahickon) is the incumbent starter and reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.
