U.S. ABROAD: Eddie Lewis' Premier League hopes alive
Leeds United downed Preston North End, 2-0, to advance 3-1 on aggregate to the final of the playoffs for promotion to the English Premier League. American Eddie Lewis, who scored in the 1-1 semifinal first leg, started and went 87 minutes.
In a game plagued by scuffles and crude tackling, Leeds players received 10 cards, including two reds, Preston striker Brett Ormerod suffered a broken leg, and the start of the second half was delayed for 25 minutes because of a power outage.
Lewis, a member of the U.S. World Cup squad, played three seasons for Preston before moving to Leeds last offseason.
In the final, Leeds is likely to meet Watford, which enters its second leg against Crystal Palace with a 3-0 lead. If Watford advances, Lewis will face off with fellow American Jay DeMerit.
