Default Taylor can't wait

Steven Taylor is closing in on his long-awaited return to the Newcastle United first-team as manager Glenn Roeder admitted his biggest problem was holding the youngster back.

The England Under-21 international dislocated his shoulder for the second time this season at Anfield on Boxing Day, barely a quarter of the way through his comeback game. Since then Taylor's rehabilitation has been uncertain. At one point he looked on schedule to squeeze in some matches before June, only for him to later reveal he feared he would not play again this season.

But Roeder has revealed the Greenwich-born player is back to full fitness and waiting for his shoulder to heal properly - which should be in time for the visit of West Bromwich Albion a week on Saturday.

"I've been very impressed with Steven Taylor," said Roeder. "Some days he works on his own but he's back to a level of physical fitness. If he had full movement in the shoulder he'd be fit enough to play."

Taylor's problems started early in the season when on England Under-21 duty. The Magpies ignored medical advice to have the problem operated on immediately but the problem resurfaced in the November 5 clash with Birmingham City.

The youngster has made good progress in terms of his general fitness but it is his shoulder which is preventing him making an immediate return to first-team football.

"Physically he'd have been okay to send out to play on Sunday but we have to get the full range of movement in his shoulder," Roeder explained.

"He's been doing lots of swimming and working in the gym. In between times he's out working with us."

Taylor's problems re-emerged when he returned to first-team action ahead of schedule and caretaker boss Roeder says holding back his competitive young defender is the biggest problem facing him at the moment.

"It's not a problem of us saying, `Be careful, no crashing into Steven.' The problem is to get Steven to stop crashing into players," he said.

"It's a long time since I've seen a player who I get the feeling would kick his granny to win and that's lovely - although not for granny."
