Villa captain Olof Mellberg will miss this weekend's Premiership fixture with Manchester United - and could miss the whole of the Christmas period - after sustaining a hamstring injury in the last few minutes of the 1-1 draw at Bolton.
A scan has revealed a slight tear which looks to have ruled out the skipper's involvement in the Christmas and New Year fixtures and is the latest blow to manager David O'Leary's team plans for the busy period ahead.
"We've been very fortunate that our two centre halves, Olof and Liam Ridgewell have been able to play in every game so far," he said. "But this news presents us with a problem we could've done without. It's a massive blow."
The news means that either Mark Delaney or Aaron Hughes will move into the centre for United's visit on Saturday.
