Newcastle midfielder Emre suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury in the defeat to Wigan and could be facing another spell on the sidelines.

The Turkish international has only just returned to the first team after recovering from the problem, but the injury curse struck once again after he limped out of the 1-0 Carling Cup defeat at the JJB Stadium.

Boss Graeme Souness is waiting to hear the full extent of the damage, but even if the problem is not serious the player is almost certain to miss this Saturday's game against Aston Villa.

The news comes as a huge blow to the Magpies manager, who is under real pressure after crashing out of the competition.
