Group A

Sunday, July 24
Italy took on France in the first game of the final day of play at the EBSL Portuguese stage. Both teams were winless in their first two games. Italy struck first with late first-period goals from Carotenuto (1:09) and Agostini (0:05). France responded with one by team captain Edouard (8:09), the only goal of the second period in which the French technically played well but was unable to capitalize on their efforts. Midway through the final period, Pasquali scored twice in less than two minutes (8:22 and 6:44), including a tremendous individual effort on the second tally in which he trapped the ball with his chest and then bounced it on his knee while turning around to shoot the ball across his body and into the left side of the net. Carotenuto added his second of the game (6:27) giving the Italians a lead they would not relinquish. France tried to answer back with a spectacular diving header by Castro (6:04), who ran from midfield to score the goal. Three minutes later, Edouard followed with his second of the day on a pass from player-coach Eric Cantona inside the goal area (3:10) but Italy kept them at bay, putting the exclamation point on the victory with a successful penalty kick by Forte (3:37). Italy finished third in the tournament, leaving France winless (0-3).

The weekend finale was a highly anticipated matchup between Spain and host Portugal, which also featured the league’s top two scorers, Spain’s Amarelle and Portugal’s Madjer. Both teams had played well in their previous two games, each going undefeated. Portugal started out with the ball bouncing their way in the first period which saw them receive a gift from Spain, who scored on their own goal (9:53). Marinho followed it up with a goal on a 3-on-1 fast break for Portugal off a corner kick by Spain at the other end, making the score 2-1 to end the first period. Amarelle brought his team closer with a goal halfway through the second (8:19), the only goal of the period by either team. In the final segment, the hosts started to pull away with a goal by Madjer (10:38). Less than a minute later Alan added another (9:57), who took a crossing pass and sent the ball into the net on a fine header. On the ensuing kickoff, Amarelle fired the ball into the upper right corner of the Portuguese goal between the post and defenseman Hernâni. Spain continued to force the action, spraying shots and making Portugal goalkeeper Bruno come up with a number of diving saves but Portugal responded with some offensive pressure of its own by Belchior, Alan and Hernâni, preserving the 4-2 win for Portugal and breaking Spain’s win streak at two.

The event in Figueira da Foz was a crowd pleaser from start to finish, with crowds filling the stadium all three days to see some of Europe’s top stars in action. They were treated to fine plays each day including Madjer’s performance (8 goals), which earned him both Top Scorer and MVP trophies for the tournament. Portugal swept the awards ceremony, taking the event championship trophy as well as Madjer’s two individual awards and the Best Goalkeeper award for Bruno, who was phenomenal throughout the three-game tourney. The teams will have three days off before traveling on Thursday to Cervia, Italy, where they will prepare for the season’s third Group A event. Play begins Friday afternoon.
