2003 Honda Award Finalist Announced 16/09/03
U.S. National Team defender Carlos Bocanegra, midfielder/forward Landon Donovan and forward Brian McBride were revealed as the three finalists for the 2003 Honda Player of the Year Award during a press conference today at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Bocanegra is a first-time finalist for the Honda Player of the Year Award. Since his debut in the final game of 2001, Carlos has emerged as one of the best defenders on the U.S. National Team. This year Carlos ranked second on the team in scoring and became only one of four defenders in the history of the U.S. National Team to score at least four goals in a season, joining former Honda Player of the Year winners Marcelo Balboa, Alexi Lalas and Thomas Dooley. Carlos attended UCLA and now plays for the Chicago Fire, where he was named MLS Rookie of the Year in 2000 and MLS Defender of the Year last season.
Last year Donovan became the youngest Honda Player of Year winner ever, and now he attempts to become only the second two-time winner and first back-to-back winner of the most prestigious award an American player can receive. This year Landon led the U.S. National Team in scoring with seven goals, and at the age of 21, he is already tied for sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 14 career goals. His four goals against Cuba in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup tied him with Walter Centeno as the tournament's leading scorer, and made him only the fourth U.S. player ever to score four goals in one game. The MVP of the 1999 U-17 FIFA World Championship, Landon currently plays for the San Jose Earthquakes.
A veteran of the U.S. National Team, McBride is a first-time finalist for the Honda Player of the Year Award. This year he moved into sole possession of third place on the U.S. National Team's all-time scoring list, trailing only two-time Honda Player of the Year award winner Eric Wynalda and Joe-Max Moore. Earlier this year while on loan to Everton of the English Premier League, Brian scored four goals in eight games before rejoining his current team the Columbus Crew at the end of March. The leading scorer and MVP of the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Brian has also played for English club Preston North End and German club Vfl Wolfsburg.
A total of 206 sports journalists from all over the country participated in the voting. Each of these players will now await the announcement of the winner, which will occur on Tuesday, October 7, during a gala award luncheon at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
The previous winners of the Honda Player of the Year award are: Landon Donovan (2002), Earnie Stewart (2001), Claudio Reyna (2000), Kasey Keller (1999), Cobi Jones (1998), Eddie Pope (1997), Eric Wynalda (1996, 1992), Alexi Lalas (1995), Marcelo Balboa (1994), Thomas Dooley (1993) and Hugo Perez (1991).
