his not going to help, the coach his the big problem
Revs Finalize Howey Acquisition 26/08/04
The New England Revolution announced Thursday that central defender Steve Howey has signed a contract with MLS and will join the Revolution. Howey, who played last season for Bolton Wanderers and Leicester City of the English Premier League, made 276 appearances in England's top division.
Howey will count as a Senior International on the Revolution roster. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"This is a strong signing for the club," said Revolution head coach Steve Nicol. "Steve is an excellent defender with experience at the top level of professional soccer and he will provide organization and leadership for us at the back." Howey, who hails from Sunderland, England, joined Newcastle United as a trainee and, after making his first team debut at age 17, made 167 league appearances for the Magpies between 1989-2000. Manchester City paid Newcastle a 2 million pound ($3.64 million) transfer fee for Howey in November of 2003 and he subsequently turned out 111 times for City in all competitions. In June of 2003, Howey signed with Leicester City and then moved to Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer in January of 2004.
"I'm very much looking forward to this move to New England," said Howey. "I got on well with the lads when I trained with the team earlier this summer and the club has first-class facilities. Steve Nicol was a great player in England and I look forward to playing for him with the Revolution."
Howey, who also played in the midfield earlier in career, made his England debut against Nigeria in 1995 and won four caps for his country.
The Revolution continues a three-game home stand this coming weekend when they host Freddy Adu and D.C. United (6-8-7, 25 pts.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Gillette Stadium. On Saturday, Sept. 4, the Revs host San Jose at 6:30 p.m. following a 4 p.m. World Cup qualifying match between the U.S. national team and El Salvador. Call 1-877-GET-REVS for ticket information.
