WHITECAPS GAME REPORT

Whitecaps Men 4 - Milwaukee Wave 0

Friday July 23, 2004

Swangard Stadium, Burnaby, BC (attendance: 5,722 - a sellout)

Overview

At a game in which the Whitecaps honoured their Super Y youth teams, it
proved to be a super night all around as the Whitecaps Men demolished
the hottest team in the league with their biggest win of the season,
before a sold-out crowd, to move into first place overall!

Steve Kindel's tenth minute goal gave Vancouver an early lead over the
visiting Milwaukee Wave United, and the Caps never looked back, powering
their way to a 4-0 win. Quicksilver Jamaican forward Winston Griffiths was the Man of the Match, scoring a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Alex Marques earned his fifth straight shutout, and hasn't allowed a goal now in 471 minutes of play, breaking the previous record of 414 minutes set by Paul Dolan in 1990.

The Whitecaps are undefeated in five, while their record goes to 12-5-2
for 38 points, extending their lead atop the Western Conference
standings to five points ahead of the Portland Timbers. Milwaukee, who
had seven wins and a tie in their previous eight games, fall to 8-8-2
and remain fourth in the West.

The Whitecaps next game is Friday July 30 at home to the Calgary
Mustangs in a special 8:00pm start. The Whitecaps Women meanwhile are
in action on Monday July 26, as they host the Mile High Mustangs of
Denver in a 7:00pm start at Swangard.

Game Notes

This was Vancouver's biggest win since a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Riverhawks on August 1, 2003.

It was Vancouver's second sellout of the season, matching the attendance of the April 30 home-opener against Edmonton (a 0-0 tie)

Oliver Heald's goal saw him break the 100 career point barrier. Heald now has 38 goals and 25 assists for 101 points in 178 games. He ranks 6th in Vancouver all-time scoring.

The Whitecaps pressured Milwaukee from the outset, and were full value for the early lead. The rest of the first half was fairly uneventful, but Vancouver dominated the second half.

The Whitecaps were without many key players, including top scorer Davide Xausa who is serving a two-game suspension, Carlo Corazzin, Geordie Lyall, and captain Alfredo Valente who are all injured, and assistant
coach Nick Dasovic who is away serving as assistant coach with the Canadian U-20 team.

The Caps are one point ahead of both the Rochester Raging Rhinos and the Montral Impact to top the A-League standings. Rochester were surprise 4-1 losers away to the Richmond Kickers Friday night.

The club honoured its seven Super Y Whitecaps youth teams at half-time, introducing all seven squads, six of which remain in contention for a trip to the Super Y League National Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Scoring Summary

10' Vanc Steve Kindel (Jeremie Piette)
A great pass from Piette was first-timed by Kindel for his second of the season.

59' Vanc Jason Jordan (Winston Griffiths)
Griffiths fed a superb defence-splitting pass to Jordan breaking in, and he poked it past the onrushing keeper for his third of the season.

70' Vanc Winston Griffiths (John Sulentic)
Sulentic chased down a ball rolling towards the end line, poked it away from a Milwaukee defender who was trying to shield it out of play, and then centered for Griffiths in front to tap in his second goal of the year.

90' Vanc Oliver Heald (Winston Griffiths)
Griffiths got the ball from recent signing Tino Cucca, and layed it off for Heald to side foot in for his fourth.
