Thumbs up Black Cats pounce for Lawrence

Sunderland have disappointed a number of clubs after snapping-up Liam Lawrence from Mansfield Town.
The out-of-contract midfielder had interested Leeds, Cardiff, Crewe and Rotherham, however he has opted to join The Black Cats.

The 22-year-old, who can play anywhere in midfield, caught the eye of a number of sides following an impressive 22-goal haul last term.

With manager Mick McCarthy axing a number of first team regulars in the summer after failing in the play-offs, the former Ireland boss was keen to strengthen.

"I'm absolutely over the moon to join Sunderland," explained Lawrence to the club's official website.

"It's a great chance for me to move up two divisions and show people what I can do.

"I've played mainly on the right for Mansfield. I like to play in the centre and I can play on the left.

"I'm not an out and out winger and I've not got blistering pace but I'm good with the ball and can link up with the midfield and forwards."
