Default Spurs get ruthless

Tottenham have begun a clear-out at White Hart Lane with Darren Anderton, Christian Ziege and Gus Poyet all being released at the end of the season.

Anderton and Ziege have both struggled with injuries recently while 36-year-old Poyet is no longer the force he was when he arrived from Chelsea in 2001.

However, captain Jamie Redknapp, who has also struggled with injuries, has been awarded a new one-year deal after he and the club came to an agreement over a contractual issue which stated he was entitled to a two-year extension provided he played a certain number of matches.

Chairman Daniel Levy told the London Evening Standard: ``We wish Darren well. Gus and Christian have given the fans much to cheer about during their stay, too.''

Anderton, capped 30 times by England, joined the club from Portsmouth in 1992 and has made more than 350 appearances in all competitions.

Poyet moved to White Hart Lane from Chelsea in the summer of 2001 and has made 97 appearances despite a serious knee injury in 2002-03 and suffering a broken arm in August.

Ziege also arrived for the start of the 2001-02 campaign and recovered from a career-threatening injury on Boxing Day 2002 to take his tally of appearances to 54.

Also being released are reserve team players Lars Hirschfeld, Shwan Jalal and Danny Foster.

Goalkeeper Hirschfeld has spent time on the bench as cover for Kasey Keller both this season and last term without making a first-team appearance. The Canadian international joined Spurs in March 2002 and had brief loan spells at Luton and Gillingham.

Redknapp was the other player whose contract was up this summer but Levy added: ``I am pleased to announce that Jamie will be staying with us for next season.''
